If you’re a sucker for McDonald’s Shamrock Shakes, you’re going to LOVE this shamrock frozen hot chocolate!
March has always been one of my favorite months because that’s when McDonald’s always has their famous Shamrock shakes. I know, I know. McDonald’s is not the best, but when you grew up in the 80s, fast food was the excitement of eating out. Well this year, word has it Shamrock shakes will not be making their way to a lot of markets across the United States.
**Updated to add that it’s now 2021 and McDonald’s DOES in fact have the Shamrock shakes!
So I set out this past weekend to re-create it. And I think it worked. In the form of Shamrock Frozen Hot Chocolate.

Frozen Hot Chocolate?
When I told Maddie that I was making ‘frozen hot chocolate’ she said “what the hell is that?” It’s kind of hard to explain but here’s the gist of it. Frozen hot chocolate is made as if you’re making hot chocolate but you then blend it with ice once it’s cooled. It’s kind of the consistency of a daiquiri or granita. Top it off with whipped cream and you’ve got one delightful frozen drink. I’ve also added a shot of super strong coffee and you have a frozen hot mocha!
Ingredients
- 3/4 c heavy whipping cream
- 1/4 c sweetened condensed milk
- 2 c milk or milk alternative
- 2 c white chocolate chips
- 6 drops green food coloring
- 1 tsp mint extract
- 4 c ice
Mix all ingredients except ice in a sauce pan until just boiling, stirring constantly so milk doesn’t burn and chocolate melts evenly. Simmer for 15 min on low stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and let cool for 30-45 min. Once cooled, blend 1 c of mixture with 2 c of ice until the consistency is like a daiquiri. Pour into your favorite frosty glass, top with whipped cream and sprinkles. Enjoy!
I used much less ice and this would make for the perfect iced Shamrock mocha! Just blend with half the amount of ice, add 1/4 c strong brewed coffee and pour over ice!
