I’m not sure how you feel about English Toffee, but it’s one of my favorite candies. I also love a good English Toffee coffee drink, but a lot of them are too sugary for my taste. The syrups, while packed with flavor can be too sweet and drown out the coffee flavor profile. Now I’m definitely not everyone, but if you’re a coffee connoisseur and enjoy the robust flavor of a good craft coffee, then chances are you and me can definitely make up “everyone”.
One of the things I enjoy during the week is experimenting with craft coffee drinks at home so at least I can save some time during my busy week. I used to stop daily for my coffee and was spending in upwards of $5-7 a day on coffee drinks, and that’s just one. Needless to say, I found some tricks that make home coffee brewing a cinch and a time saver. I typically don’t use syrups when I’m at home, unless I’ve made it myself like this one. If I do use syrups, I prefer 1883 Maison. They are tasty syrups and have a lot of flavor without being overly sweet. The only time you want sweetness to over power your coffee is if it’s burnt. And coffee should never taste burnt, even dark roast. Anyhow … I digress. From my experience, there’s a whole lot of people out there that enjoy a dash of sugar with their coffee and not the other way around.
Chocolatey and Nutty
English toffee is basically butter and sugar caramelized to created a beautiful brown color. This carmelization creates a nutty flavor and when toffee is dipped in chocolate, well, there ya have it. Heaven. So in creating this concoction, I thought why not melt down some toffee to create a syrup of sorts! You’ll need a simple syrup base (water and sugar) and some toffee bits, which are really just crushed toffee candies. This will store in the fridge all week for you. I say a week because there’s a good chance that after Friday it will be gone! But if you want it to last a while, it should be good in the fridge for up to two weeks. Now for the chocolatey part; if you use straight toffee, a delicious chocolate noted roast for the coffee like this one, would take this drink over the top!
Making Homemade Flavored Syrups
It really is simple making your own syrups and can save a TON of money. Here are some other uses for home made syrups:
- Ice cream toppers
- Hot cocoa add-ins
- Drizzle for berries or fruit
- Serve with pancakes, french toast or waffles
- Drizzle on top of biscuits or scones
The best part about making your own is that you can control the sugar content in them. If you want sugar free, use your preferred sugar substitute instead.
The English Toffee Syrup Recipe
The syrup part is super easy. Combine 1 cup of water, 1 cup of sugar and about 1/2-3/4 cup of crushed toffee pieces in a saucepan and bring to a boil, stirring occasionally and making sure it doesn’t boil over. Reduce heat to a simmer for 10 min. Your syrup is ready to use or let cool for 15-20 minutes before storing in the refrigerator. Containers like this one work perfectly! Plus who doesn’t love a mason jar! Now on to make your English Toffee Lattè!

The love it. I mean isn’t it challenging to find Almond Roca at the store around the holidays? I couldn’t even find Ghiradelli chocolate with toffee bits on the shelves this year.
